Maghull 1 vs 1 TMS
A hardworking performance gives us a share of the points.
We were going to have to bounce back from last weeks disappointing result against Cobra if we were going to get anything from this game against our final opponents TMS. The team talk consisted of telling the kids to always work hard & to also not let the season fade out, as this seemed to be missing the previous week. We spoke about not always playing well but hard work & concentration should be there at all times, todays performance typified that. TMS played all their best players for the whole game in trying to avenge our last encounter so we knew it was going to be tough.
From the first minute the game started at a frantic pace with TMS throwing everything at us to get an early goal but we were more than equal to this with our defending & work rate. We were limiting them to long range strikes only but each time Kirby made her saves look comfortable. They did have a run of corners in this half which we dealt with greatly. (this being something that we have been asking of the kids to be more aggressive in both boxes) It wasn't all TMS though as were hitting them on the break but our final pass let us down to make the most of our possession. The game was turning into a real midfield battle with both sides not letting up.
Half Time : 0-0
Maghull came into the game a lot more in an attacking sense in this half so it was TMS turn to be on the back foot but we encountered a solid defence & a goalie in great form. Johnson & McNally were having a right tussle against TMS centre midfield with Reid sweeping up behind. We should of went ahead in the game when Warwick found space down the right but he failed to find his pass with Howard & Smith waiting in the box to strike. TMS then made us pay for this by going up our end & scoring a great goal from outside the box, it was unjust. As always with this team our heads never drop & within a minute we were on equal terms. Howards long throw caused uncertainty in the TMS box, before we blinked the ball was in the net. (Not sure who the scorer was, so i'll give it to Sean) The rest of the half was played out in similiar fashion between two determined teams who didn't want to lose, this being typified by Alex & Max going head to head in centre midfield but it was us who were ending the strongest. We forced a run of corners & a few free kicks that we should of made more of. One of these was caused by a great Thomas run down the left were he beat two man but found his tellinh cross cut out, despite this we nearly gave it away at the end with pushing forward too much. TMS broke through for the first time & found themselves in a one on one with Kirby in goal who stood up till the last second then produced what the kids call a worldy to make sure we shared the points.
Full Time : 1-1
We have & will play a lot better than this but in terms of workrate, determination & concentration it was exemplary from an U8s team. Let's hope we can take this performance into the last two games of the season & see were it takes us into the league. No matter were we end up its been a great first season for this fairly new team, if we can improve on a few things & bring one or two new faces into the squad we will be even better next season i'm sure.
Player Of The Game : Kirby was again outstanding in goal, how she makes her saves look easy i'll never know. Alex also deserves a mention for his 50 minute battle with Max. It was also good to have Tom back after his illness last week.
