Maghull 6 vs 2 Churchtown Athletic

Unbeaten run continues

The unbeaten run for the Under 7’s continues with a hard fought but deserved 6-2 victory over Churchtown Athletic. Prior to the half term break the boys had been in good form and they continued their winning ways with Patrick Irving grabbing his third hat trick of the season.

We started well and dominated the first 15 minutes of the game by which time we were 3-0 up with goals from Patrick Irving (2) and Sean Clarke. We were solid again at the back with Ryan Bridgewater and Max Melia, playing in defence for the first time, looking very comfortable. Joe Wilson, making his debut for the team, had a good start playing left midfield and made a great assist to create an opening for Patrick Irving to score a well taken second goal. The game was turned when the referee awarded two harsh penalties for Churchtown, one following a good strong tackle from Sean Clarke and the second following a hand ball by Patrick Irving which appeared to hit his elbow and he could do little to get out of the way. Unfortunately both penalties were finished emphatically by the Churchtown penalty takers giving Kian Nythe no chance in goal.

We responded well and quickly scored again when Alex Roberts, playing in an unfamiliar role up front, finished well to make it 4-2 at half time.

Half Time: 4-2

The second half was frustrating as we allowed Churchtown back in the game and they missed a number of chances which, had they converted them, would have made the game much tougher for us. Kian Nythe continued to do well in goal and made a fantastic save which Pepe Reina would have been proud of to keep Churchtown at bay. Our continued hard work was soon rewarded when Ben Myers added another goal with a well struck shot in the penalty area to make it 5-2. Churchtown continued to press and we defended resolutely. The game was finally put beyond doubt when Patrick Irving scored late in the game to make it 6-2.

Overall, I think we played well but I know we can play a lot better. If we can improve our passing and finish the many chances we create I’m sure we will score many more goals. We made hard work of it at times culminating in a much tougher second half, with Churchtown, to their credit, showing great determination to get back in the game. Fortunately and with great credit to the boys, we managed to increase our lead and continue our well deserved unbeaten run.

Man of the Match: Max Melia played well in defence but for his overall performance and completing another hat trick, it goes to Patrick Irving.

Scorers: Patrick(3), Sean, Alex and Ben.
