Town exit cup despite spirited performance

Maidenhead Town hosted premier division high flyers Slough Laurencians in a tasty league cup-tie and were looking to build on their promising start to the season.

The game started at a high tempo, with both sides flying into some big tackles from the off. Town found some joy in wide areas, with Angel and Jeffries keen to push on their opposing fullbacks.

The aerial threat of captain David Hyde proved the most effective avenue for Town, with the centre back coming close on several occasions from set pieces. Despite Town’s strong start to the game, it was Laurencians who took the lead. A long through ball was taken down and finished well past an onrushing Hutchinson.

The lead was doubled a few minutes later after the Laurencians winger nicked past the full back and finished with a dink over the Town keeper.

The second half saw a determined Town head out looking for a route back into the game and it was Harling who got the ball rolling. The striker drove down the left hand side, cutting in to score his third of the season.

As was the case with the first half, the wide areas were proving fruitful for Town. A cracking cross from Jeffries was glanced in from substitute Burley. Four goals now for centre forward.

Town continued to press and had a handful of opportunities to score a vital equaliser. Man of the match Birkett was inches away from converting a diving header and Roberts came close with an audacious half volley from a tight angle.

Towns search for an equaliser left them vulnerable on the break and a clearance from within the Laurencians area left their striker one on one with Hutchinson, who was unable to prevent a fourth and final goal.
Despite the result there were plenty of positives to be taken into Town’s next game against Reading Dons.
