Last gasp penalty sees Wycombe snatch cup from Magpies
An Olly Taylor penalty, deep into stoppage time, meant Wycombe snatched the County Cup away from the Magpies by the odd goal in five.
With the wind at their backs the Magpies were in the ascendancy from the kick off, Mark Nisbet and Ashley Smith both going close to scoring in the opening five minutes. Then Wycombe struck twice against the run of play to race into a two goal lead by the ten minute mark.
Firstly Alan Bennett found Kieran Murtagh with a slide rule pass, Murtagh beating former Chairboy Williams with a cool finish. Then Taylor beat the offside trap before unselfishly squaring the ball to Bloomfield who finished to double Wanderers lead.
The Magpies soon shrugged off this double setback though with the dynamic running of Smith instigating a fightback which saw United level the score. Firstly Smith latched onto a weak back pass from Marvin McCoy and slotted a neat shot past goalkeeper Steve Arnold, Lee Barney helping the ball over the line to make sure of the goal. The some exquisite inter passing between Martel Powell and Barney set up Smith to score himself.
Both sides had a good chance to take the lead before the break, ex Magpie Jerome Federico passing up a great chance to score, then Arnold denying Barney by tipping his shot around the post.
The interval signalled the end of goalmouth excitement before Taylor scored from the penalty spot right at the death to win the Cup.
