Another Gray day for the Magpies

Wayne Gray's opening goal midway through the first half instigated another home defeat for Maidenhead United.

After a slow start play off chasing Chelmsford began to take control, cranking up the pressure on the Maidenhead defence with a series of set pieces.
The pace of Ricky Modeste on City's right wing was a well known threat and when he cut inside on a mazy run leading the United defence on a merry dance, Gray was able to move into the vacuum created in the penalty area. On receipt of Modeste's pass he fired home with ease to put City ahead in the 28th minute.
The frailties of Maidenhead's defence looked ripe for exploitation but United weathered the storm and started to push forward using the outlet of talented left winger Max Worsfold.
Reaching half time just one goal behind Maidenhead came out after the interval looking determined to get back into the game and when a Jefferson Louis shot went narrowly over the bar hopes were raised of a comeback. These were swiftly dashed when Rob Edmans doubled the lead from close range after Maidenhead failed to clear.
Whatever the deficiencies of the Maidenhead team, a tendency to quit isn't one of them and Louis soon hit the target only to be foiled by the feet of goalkeeper Carl Pentney. At the other end captain Ashley Nicholls kept United in the game when he cleared a Gray shot off the line and with City unable to see off United, a late goal from Jon-Jo Bates raised the prospect of a unlikely late fightback, especially when the referee signalled five minutes of stoppage time. However this came to naught leaving City to celebrate another three points in their push for promotion whilst the gap between Maidenhead and safety grew once more.
