Magnificent Mark's Service Marked
Legends welcomed back to York Road
Long serving former Magpie Mark Nisbet was honoured with a testimonial fixture at York Road for a decade of sterling service to the club and Nis brought back a host of former Maidenhead playing colleagues with him, amassing 1669 MUFC starts between them. Their opponents, the current first team squad, used the occasion as a useful warm up for the season ahead as the club sails uncharted waters. And the class of 2017 were given a real test before perhaps superior fitness told only in the final ten minutes of a match played in glorious sunshine.
It was the Mark Nisbet XI who opened the scoring in this match. An unusual aberration from Dean Inman allowed Jonathan Hippolyte in to lob expertly over the head of Nick Hamann after the quarter hour much to the delight of his dad Drax who was motivating his charges from the unfamiliar location of the away dugout at York Road. Warren Carter thwarted Maidenhead with a string of fine saves and it was only midway through the second half that the hosts equalised when Jake Hyde met a right flank centre with a measured header which looped over the flailing Carter. There were a string of substitutions as many very welcome old faces were given the opportunity to tread the lush York Road turf and the pick of the Nisbet XI was undoubtedly the testimonial man himself who rolled back the years with a composed performance operating mostly in central midfield.
Two goals in as many minutes inside the final ten firstly from Dave Tarpey - following good work by McKenzie - and then a low accurate drive from Pritchard gave Maidenhead a comfortable advantage before McKenzie turned in a Tarpey assist laid on a plate. The most applause however was reserved for the final moments of a match played in good spirit and well refereed by Mr David Cox as Nisbet was withdrawn in favour of Alex Wall. Both benches and all on the pitch and in the stands raised for a well deserved ovation for a gentleman off the pitch and a legend and leader on the pitch.
