Cole screamer earns point
Maidenhead 1 – 1 Ebbsfleet
Reece Cole scored with just his second touch as a Magpie to ensure the spoils were shared with visitors Ebbsfleet under the lights at York Road. The second half substitute had just entered the pitch before nestling a 25-yard free kick into the top corner after Michael Cheek had given the Fleet an early lead.
Dave Tarpey was inserted straight into the starting line-up, following his loan return from Barnet. There were also starts for Harold Odametey after suspension and Adrian Clifton, the match winner from Saturday’s 1-0 win at Sutton.
It was the visitors who would have the first meaningful attempt on target in the 7th minute. Whitely cut in from the left and his low 20 yard effort was well gathered by Pentney. The energetic winger then turned provider for Michael Cheek as he released the striker in the left channel with 14 played who drove into the box and finished under Pentney. The keeper’s attempted save took the venom off the ball when it looked like Massey could clear off the line but the deflection wrong-footed Massey and hit the back of the net. 0-1.
Following the goal Ebbsfleet enjoyed a good spell of possession but were nearly the masters of their own downfall. In the 27th minute Clifton intercepted a pass, driving forwards towards goal but he was unable to convert when 1 on 1 with Ashmore. This would prove to be Maidenhead’s only telling chance of the first half although they did finish the half stronger, Obileye and Worsfold having shots on goal blocked.
As they did in the first half Ebbsfleet started well and Maidenhead’s goalkeeper was to thank for keeping them in it. In similar style to the first goal Cheek found space in the Magpies penalty area but this time Pentney stood up to tall to block his 52nd minute strike. Just a minute later Pentney was diving to his right pushing away Weston’s rasping left shoot effort.
Devonshire’s first change came on the hour mark as he brought on Kelly for Tarpey, the returning legend able to get good minutes in his legs on the night. It would be Devonshire’s second sub in the 70th minute that would prove to be the games big turning point. Reece Cole, on loan from Brentford replaced Odametey and minutes later the Magpies won a free kick in a central position 25 yards from goal. Cole showed no hesitation as he nestled it into the top left corner, the ball dropping considerably to beat the wall and give Ashmore no chance. 1-1.
Kedwell almost put Ebbsfleet back in front with a clever header across the face of goal in the 80th minute before Magpies skipper Massey fired a powerful effort a few yards over the bar following a corner.
Clifton saw his powerful shot swerve past Ashmore’s left post and Jack King headed wide in injury time for the Fleet as the spoils were shared at York Road. The 1-1 draw between the sides makes it 3 on the bounce with the same scoreline.
