Town take the spoils
Harrogate have York Road maximum
Brentford loanee Reece Cole was named in the Magpies starting XI after impressing midweek with his incredible free-kick to earn a point. There were also starts for Ryan Bird and a return for Remy Clerima who had been absent from that draw with Ebbsfleet on Tuesday night, writes Grace Scott.
Town applied pressure from the off at York Road, with Pentney called into action inside the opening ten minutes; Fallowfield’s strike from 25 yards out was collected comfortably by the Stripes stopper. The visitors did however find an early breakthrough where a corner wasn’t cleared by the Maidenhead defence and Callum Howe converted Beck’s header from close range.
The first half pressure was relentless from Harrogate. Muldoon won the ball back in the home side’s half, only to be denied by the post. The resulting ricochet bounced off Pentney before being cleared away from danger by Massey. Muldoon again looked to threaten, Obileye and Massey throwing themselves in front of his effort from two yards out.
Against the run of play the Magpies levelled in the 25t minute. Maidenhead won a free-kick after Belshaw ill-advisedly picked up a back pass. Cole whipped the ball into the box, and following a deflection Clifton was in the right place to tuck the ball home. Despite the lengthy discussion between the referee and linesman following the goal, a potential offside was dismissed and the goal stood.
On the stroke of half time, the visitors looked to double their goal tally through Falkingham, who shot over from eight yards out after Pentney had denied the busy Muldoon. Harrogate will feel that they should have been ahead at the break, missed chances and latch ditch defending denying them a lead.
After a rather slow start to the second half for the Magpies, clever link up play from Comley and Clifton down the left wing gave the latter a chance on goal. Burrell subsequently cleared the danger for Town. Both teams then made a raft of changes, with Kelly replacing goal-scorer Clifton for the Stripes and for the visitors Knowles and Woods came on in place of Thomson and Muldoon.
The winning goal of the game came in the 77th minute. Langmead sweeping the ball into the net from another dangerous corner after Maidenhead failed to clear. Shortly after conceding, Maidenhead went onto make a double substitution; Alves and Odametey taking Obileye and Cole’s place on the pitch.
In the final ten minutes, Harrogate were denied by the post when Leesley worked his way down the left hand side and worked an opening to shoot. The resulting shot hit the woodwork and was eventually cleared. The four minutes of additional time and earlier substitutions proved not enough for Maidenhead to get an equaliser, bringing their two game unbeaten run to an end.
