After the opening four weeks of the season were rained out, Maldon's season finally got underway as they travelled to Lakenheath. The newly promoted hosts were asked to bat first by Maldon Captain Jimmy Ainscough, and his side took to the field full of confidence after a successful end to the 2011 season.

Opening bowlers Luke Fleming and Jack Riley found a good line and length early, with Riley striking early as he had Adam Horrex stumped by Jimmy Ainscough for 2 in the fourth over.
Fleming struck soon after to dismiss the aggressive Greg Palmer for 13, to leave the hosts 24-2. After that Gary Bannister took centre stage. His 4-20 from 9 accurate overs took the game away from the hosts. He was aided by some good Maldon fielding, including an excellent one-handed catch by Gary's brother Neil. Jamie Glenn and Ian Elliott also took wickets in the later stages of the innings, and despite a quickfire 27 from Mark Harvey, Lakenheath were dismissed for exactly 100 in the 34th over.

In reply, Maldon lost opener Chris Harris early on, but Ian Elliott and Jamie Glenn took Maldon's score on. Despite difficult conditions and a slow outfield, Glenn and Elliott's partnership of 46 took Maldon to almost the halfway mark. After Elliott was dismissed for 16, Luke Fleming joined Glenn at the crease. When Glenn fell for 28, he was soon followed by Martyn Coker to see Maldon's score 61 for 4. However, Jimmy Ainscough's aggressive 26 took the game away from the hosts. Despite him and Neil Bannister departing with ten runs needed, Marc Gozzett joined Fleming to see Maldon over the line with more than half their overs to spare.
