!08 minutes of determined, passionate and gutsy rugby saw Malone 2nd XV defeat Queens University 2nd XV in the Final of the McCrea Cup
Malone 2nd XV wrestled the McCrea Cup away from holders Queens University 2nd XV at Ravenhill. It took a total of 108 minutes of rugby before the game was one.
The game concluded after normal time with a 10-10 scoreline, though the referee played almost 6 minutes of injury time.
The opening period of the Game was dominated by Queens with Malone showing a strong defence, it was Malone who hit the scoreboard first after a period of heavy pressure from the Malone pack veteran scrum half Gareth Fry crossed the line on 36 minutes, the conversion from Michael Marwood shaved the post. To put Malone ahead 5-0
Malone extended their lead 4 minutes into the second half when second row Gareth Craig got over from close range, the resultant conversion from Marwood went begging. Malone now 10-0 ahead.
Queens upped the pressure again and Malone had to show staunch defence to keep them out, however on 50 minutes Queens scored after a neat back line move saw them score a try from Eoin Devlin, Cartmill was left with an easy conversion the score Malone ahead 10-7.
As the game came to a close it looked as if Malone had done enough but deep into injury time Queens were awarded a penalty which Cartmill kicked to level the scores at 10-10. The final whistle blown saw the game after a short break resume with a further period of 20 minutes to be played.
In the opening half of extra time both sides exchanged tries with Malone winger Kyle Jordan scoring first, then Queens equalised with a try from their out half Stewart, this left the score 15-15.
Malone were playing with great determination and every player gave their all, making excellent tackles, and working tirelessly for each other, it looked like the McCrea Cup was to be shared but Malone mounted one last attacking move and close to the line prop and Prop Gary Crawford emerged and crossed the Queens line to claim a momentous victory for Malone.
The team and the assembled Malone supporters went ballistic, this was a magnificent effort from the whole Malone squad, it was a display of guts, passion and most of all the belief that they would be successful.
Congratulations to each and every player, the manager and coaches for a very successful season. Not forgetting the supporters who made themselves heard.
