Driffield Under 14's 42 - 19 Malton and Norton Under 14's

by James Cunningham

Malton enjoyed a second half comeback, but it was too little, too late for them.

Driffield dominated the first half and scored five unanswered tries. Too often Malton were guilty of ball watching and strong defence from Tom Morrison was the only reason they weren’t further in arrears. Driffield controlled the setpiece and were always a yard quicker in the phase play. Halftime score was 35 – 0.
Malton increased the intensity of their play in the second half and started to win the collisions. The scrum, which had been creaking, started to take the opposition ball as well as their own. The platform was set and Malton began to make inroads with the ball in hand. Isaac Turnbull recycled the ball well in the rucks and helped by Driffield conceding penalties for not releasing Malton marched into Driffield’s 22. From a Matty Wilson run the ball came to Ben Tenge who weaved a way to the try line to touch down. James Wood kicked the conversion. It wasn’t too long before Ben Tenge again got his hands on the ball, this time coming off his wing, and again his mazy running led to his second try. A rare second half foray from Driffield gave them their only score in the half, but Malton didn’t let their heads go down and were soon once again in Driffield’s half. Strong running from Will Hampshire and some clever passing gave James Wood a run to the line for a try that he also converted to leave the final score 42 – 19. Man of the Match was Tom Morrison for his strong tackling.
