Castleford made a strong start to the game and took a sleepy Malton side by surprise. They ran in two converted tries in quick succession leaving Malt stunned. Thankfully, the wake up call came just in time and winger Joe Leak took the Castleford back line on around the outside and sneaked a try in on the touchline. This was out of range for Alex
Caine but brought the score to 5 – 14. Malt now kept the pressure up and a determined Josh Peirson scrambled over the line giving Alex
his first conversion opportunity. Malt were now camped in the opposition half and it was only a matter of time before Jack
Young sliced through the defence and crossed the line. Alex
Caine converted bringing the half time score to 19 – 14.
The turn around saw the game swing from end to end. Jack
Young crossed the line again. He also took the conversion but was sadly unsuccessful. This appeared to put the game out of Castlefords reach but they managed to make another score leaving a Malton backline standing. This brought the final score to 24 – 19 in Maltons favour. This was just the start to the New Year that the U16’s needed and should stand them in good stead to take on Ripon away next week.
