An inspired but rain-soaked Malton side made a strong start dominating Goole in all departments. Tim Grey sliced open the opposition defence and put Joe Leak away for an early try. The remainder of the first half was pressure all the way from Malton and just before the break, Josh Wood crashed over to bring the half time score to 10 – 0 with Alex
Caine narrowly missing the conversion.
The turnaround saw Goole start with a change of tactics. The fly-half’s brief was to kick into space every time. This had the desired effect and was to soon wear Malton down. The pack’s domination disappeared and the backs couldn’t quite put the try scoring moves together and Malton’s hold on the game slipped away. Goole were on a roll and ran in five fine tries. A good-tempered and exciting game to watch but it didn’t quite go to plan. Probably, less wearing conditions might have seen a different result but we’ll never know!
