A mighty Malton squad made a strong start to the game in poor conditions. They constantly battered WPL but couldn’t quite break through. The pressure soon brought dividends and Jack Macleod crashed over for a try ably converted by Eddie Wilson. The remainder of the half saw play swing from end to end with neither side scoring in the deteriorating conditions. Malton went into the break with a 7 – 0 lead.
At the turnaround WPL were playing with the slope and it wasn’t long before Malton’s old foe, the overlap, reared its head and the visitors ran in a fine try out on the wing bringing the score to 7 – 5. By now it was getting difficult to tell the teams’ colours apart but Sam Hawley made no mistake about which way he was playing and battered his way over the line leaving the visitors needing a converted score to draw level. Awarded a penalty in the middle of the pitch and well within range Alex Caine made no mistake and sealed Maltons victory at 15 – 5. Malton lost Tim Grey and Eddie Wilson to injury and we wish them both a speedy recovery.
