Old Brods arrived at The Gannock as one of the front runners of North 1 East. They left a deflated and shell shocked outfit who had been almost totally outgunned in every department by a rampant Malton and Norton side who ran in seven tries with some of the best rugby they have played for quite some considerable time.
For the first quarter of the game it was Old Brods who held the upper hand with Malton having great difficulty in getting out of their own half. Good defence kept the visitors at bay until the twentieth minute when malt were penalised for handling in a ruck. Brods fly half Danny Wood took the points to take the lead. Malton struck back immediately having had the wake up call. The pack resecured the ball from the kick off and drove forward relentlessly. Brods eventually conceded a free kick and from the scrum Malton drove forward before N0.8 Mark BRADSHAW picked up to feed flanker Sam TRIFFITT who stormed over for the opening try. Teei PIAWI missed the difficult conversion but then went on to give another impeccable display of the art of place kicking. Ten minutes later Malton were awarded a penalty smack in front of the posts and when most were expecting a kick at goal they opted for a scrum. That decision was fully justified as the pack drove forward and set up a maul to get over the line and for Paul DOBSON to touch down. This time Piawi made no mistake and increased the lead to 12 – 3. Five minutes later Brods got their second penalty when malton were caught offside at a ruck. So far as the visitors were concerned that was the end as Malton then took the game by the scruff of the neck. As half time approached the pack again made good ground with Paul DOBSON to the fore before releasing the ball to the backs where fly half Chris CREBER linked with centre Jarad WILLIAMS who used his speed and size to cross for his sides third try which Piawi converted to give Malton a 19- 6 half time lead.
The second half saw Malton play with 14 men for much of the time as three players were sent to the sin bin, fortunately not at the same time. However, they were in no mood to be charitable and when they ran the ball from defence in the second minute Williams set off on a race along the touchline, handing or swatting off defenders like flies, and made fully sixty metres before releasing wing Ben MARTIN to touch down in the corner. The conversion from Piawi was straight and true. Ten minutes later the backs and forwards combined with some swift handling and ball retention before setting up a maul for hooker Liam VAUGHAN to get the score and Piawi to convert. This was at the stage when Malton were playing with fourteen men and suffered another blow when Ryan LONSDALE who had only been on the field for a few minutes was carried off on a stretcher with a spinal injury. Undeterred, they increased the agony for Old Brods. From a scrum thirty metres out Triffitt fed scrum half Tom COLLARD who in turn set wing Josh SAUNDERS on his way. The supreme finisher had no hesitation in side stepping the first opponent before sprinting over for his customary try. The conversion was a formality. With the last move of the game Malton again ran a free kick from defence and this time Piawi made the break to set fullback Ian COOKE on his way. On halfway he handed on to Williams who again used both strength and speed to get over the whitewash for the final score of the game. Piawi again added the extras and Malton had taken the scalp of one of the league front runners without conceding a try themselves.
From 1 to 18 this was a true squad performance. Once Malton had got their act together they were unstoppable in all departments. The hard hours on the training ground are now paying dividends and with the 2nd XV also gaining some notable scalps times are looking bright at The Gannock. The strength in depth is good and competition for places keen which all make for better sides.
Next week Malton travel to Halifax to meet Old Crossleyans.
