Malton & Norton U16s 22 – Wensleydale U16s 5
Malt U16s get fired up!
Wensleydale made a strong start to the game and although Malton had a large squad, they were looking weak. The visitors constantly pushed up to Malt’s end and using their powerful pack, took the ball over the line to open the scoring with an unconverted try. Malton immediately reacted to this and took the play down to the visitor’s end. An overlap in the offering fell foul of a missed pass, which forced a knock-on. Malt’s pack came to life and took the ball against the head. The ball swung slickly along the back line and winger Joe Leak went over in the corner to draw the scores level. Malton knew what they had to do but Wensleydale were not going to make it easy.
Jack Young is not one to run around the oppositions’ back line preferring to take them head-on. Today was no exception and he was next in line to spoil the visitors’ day. Now camped at the visitors’ end a line out saw Tim Grey snatch the ball at the front and force his way over to bring the half-time score to 15 – 5 in Malton’s favour.
The turn around saw play swinging from end to end. The previous scores had all been out on the touchline indicating that both sides were defending like mad and pushing the play out to the wings. Fortunately Malton had a winger who could capitalise on this. Making the only score of the half, Joe Leak crossed the line and had generated the space to head for the posts bringing the conversion within Eddie Wilson’s range. Final score was 22 – 5 in Malton’s favour. Wensleydale proved to be tough opposition and any future fixture could easily see a reversal in result!
