Malvern back on winning track

Malvern 43 Longton 17

Malvern got back to winning ways with a comprehensive victory against basement club Longton. The Spring Lane side started explosively as Luke Milton broke from a ruck to feed Jack curtis, who stormed through to score in the corner. They doubled the score as they ran back upfield , moving the ball out to Conor Giggle, who in turn slipped the ball inside to the supporting Milton for a beautifully worked try. With Malvern playing a high tempo game, the big Longton side were finding it difficult to contain them, and the third score soon came as the ball was run out of defence and giggle won the race to ground a kick ahead. The Visitors replied after a penalty and catch and drive move, but Malvern's response was to once again run from defence to set Curtis off for his second score. From the restart, they headed straight back into away territory, James Tutty making headway to set up Ieuan Mustow for Malvern's fifth try of the day.
After the break, with Malvern perhaps relaxing a little, Longton decided to play to their main strength, the weight and power of their pack and for long periods kept possession. They were finally rewarded with a try in the corner, and continued to test the Malvern defence, which tackled like demons to keep them at bay. Even a yellow card was not enough to help the visitors, and Malvern eventually broke out to nearly go over in the corner, halted only by a high tackle which saw the referee award a penalty try. Malvern's score fest ended after a finely worked move across field which saw a Giggle score in the corner. Longton did manage to add one more try to their tally after Malvern fumbled the restart, but the scoreboard said it all at the final whistle.
With the two other teams round Malvern also both winning, next week's visit to Worcester becomes crucial as they attempt to catch up with their hosts and move into a slightly more secure position. This is followed by another key match against Moseley Oak in a fortnight before top team Newbold arrive at Spring Lane.
