Malvern U15s 12, Worcester U15s 12

Yet another highly entertaining game for the Under 15s – played on a firm pitch under cloudless skies at Spring Lane. And as both squads were down on numbers with injuries and the arrival of the Easter holidays, it was a tough morning for the players, and the waterboys were doing regular business.

Malvern started well and took an early lead when Max Hill crossed for a try. But then the level of performance dipped: the forwards were not able to bring the intensity to their play which has been evident in recent weeks, and Worcester’s tackling rocked them backwards too often for comfort.

Unfortunately Malvern’s own tackling let them down as the visitors hit back. Their full-back ran a clearing kick back at, and through, the home defence and was able to make a neat offload to a supporting runner who went in under the posts. The conversion was missed and the teams were level at 5-5.

Worcester now held the upper hand and it was no surprise when they took the lead with a converted try, and at half-time they led 12-5.

Words were said at the break, and Malvern’s game improved noticeably in the second period. The kicking for position was better, and the team managed to maintain possession for longer spells. Even so, Worcester continued to match them and their backs looked dangerous when they spread the ball wide.

But finally, with 10 minutes left, Malvern were back in the game. The ball was worked right, driven on well by the forwards and, when it was switched quickly across to the left, George Cox cut inside his marker to touch down. Stefan Nzi converted to bring the scores level.

There was still time for more action. First Malvern were awarded a penalty which they opted to go for goal, but Stefan’s kick rebounded off the post. Then when Worcester counter attacked from deep inside their own 22, their backs seemed to have got away down the right, only for March Cossali-Francis to produce a try saving tackle to take the winger into touch.

A fine game from both teams, much enjoyed by a raucous crowd from both camps!
