MRFC U14s Barbarians 41 v Dudley Kingswinford 17

"Possibly the best all round team performance that they have given all season!"

Barbarians v Dudley Kingswinford U14s Sunday 15th April 2018

The forecast looked good for our third and final fixture of the season against Dudley Kingswinford. The weather let us down, but The Barbarians certainly didn’t in what was possibly the best all round performance that they have given all season.

Buoyed by both home and away victories against DK already this year, the squad didn’t think they simply had to turn up to win this one however. Their coaching team have worked hard with them, and their powerful forward work is something that we can learn from; shoving the ball “up the jumper” for a few phases made good territory against us today.

It was great to have Charlie join the back line for the fixture, and his vocal leadership of the defensive line made all of our backs up their game. DKs did not enjoy the rush defence that The Barbarians produced, and there were many occasions of spilled ball caused by this.

Despite the damp conditions, The Barbarians were determined to play some lovely, flowing rugby, stretching the DK defence, and it was no coincidence that five of our seven tries were scored by the back three. Our pack managed to win many rucks, and Lorenzo, who lead the team superbly today, made sure that we played rugby on the front foot.

Josh M (in his first start at fly half) shone, launching a swift backline who dropped very few passes. Alfie opened the scoring with a well worked move to the right wing. Charlie was on hand on the opposite side of the pitch to see off a few attempted tackles and Josh O showed his silky, soccer skills by dribbling the ball over the line and diving over. With Josh M taking on the kicking duties, Malvern finished the keenly-contested half 17-7 up after DKs touched down near the posts.

The half time team talk was easy for the coaching staff; more of the same, and go out and believe in yourselves. With the slope now in their favour, The Barbarians hit their stride from kick off. Henry took a great catch and ran the ball back into the DK half with interest. Callum and Tobi were on hand, like they were all game, to quickly ruck the ball clear, and another lovely passing move across the backline allowed Charlie to get his brace.

Soon after, an infringement on the DK 22 gave Josh M a penalty, and his quick tap and go allowed him to touch down nearly unopposed as many of the defenders turned their backs. The conversion was successful.

The forwards then began to get the upper hand. Harvey, Sam H and Alastair (who was a real nuisance for DK!) all made great ground throughout the game, allowing Lorenzo to launch the backs, and the tag team duo of Seth and Sam M on the flanks saved a number of tries, using the touchline as an effective extra defender, as well as ripping the ball in contact.

A 5 metre scrum allowed Sam H to again carry towards the line, quick recycling saw the ball get to Louis who crashed over to extend The Barbarians’ lead and our final try of the morning saw Thom burst through the DK line to set up Josh O in the corner, making it 41-7.

In praise of the DK squad, they refused to lie down and their trademark forward drives and pick and go tactics saw them score two further tries, to leave the final score 41-17.

Well done to all of the squad today. You were a real credit to the club, worked so well as a team and showed great sportsmanship throughout. We look forward to our final two fixtures of the season over the coming fortnight. Onwards and Upwards!
