MRFC u13 B v Alcester
A fantastic end to the season
It was a lovely sunny start to the day as the Bs set off for their last competitive fixture of the season against Alcester. After a last minute loss against them earlier on in the season, the lads were determined to make amends. Being light in numbers, Alcester were kind in supplying three players for each half. Pre-match, we discussed the importance of a strong start, making our tackles and putting a stop to their playmaker. The boys took this on board.
From the kick off, Malvern took control of the game and dominated the opening 10 minutes. Poweller and Josh were joined by Kieran in the front row, and with the rest of the pack once again showed their strength in winning scrums against the head.
A quick lapse of concentration lead to Alcester running nearly the full length of the pitch to score. However, heads did not drop.
Corey caught a huge clearance kick from Alcester, and ran it back with interest into their 22. Michael at scrum half was always in the thick of the action, and it was his quick ball from the back of the next ruck that lead to George punching holes from fly half, offloading to Kieran who unselfishly fed our right wing on loan from the opposition to run in the score. Half time 1-1.
A quick half time talk focused on the importance of competing at the ruck, and avoiding running into trouble.
Malvern continued the second half where they left off at the interval. Sam and Ed made some great tag team tackles, one big one on their star player. Another turnover saw Josh O gather the ball and jinked his way through the defence and showed great strength in taking their last defender over the line with him to make it 2-1.
Mo put in a great shift at outside centre, running some great lines and showing resilience after picking up a stud in his wrist.
The third try came from a great team effort. The forwards again securing good ball which passed through all of the backs until it reached Corey on the wing, who looped around the last two defenders and he touched down under the posts.
A tap penalty again saw Alcester catch us unaware, and a quick pass out saw them go in at the corner to make it tense at 3-2.
Josh M loved taking the ball into contact, and his power showed as he ran direct at their playmaker, knocking him out of the way as the forwards came in to support. Ed was held up just short of the line, but another break from our on loan winger saw the ball passed to our stand in second row to make it 4-2 on the final whistle.
A great morning of clean, hard rugby but a fantastic effort from all of the lads to finish the season on a high. We are really proud of you.
Many thanks to all of the parents and carers for their support this season. We look forward to seeing you all at the club for the fun day next Sunday.
