The sun shines on Manchester Tigers in Macclesfield!
Macclesfield were very welcoming hosts today for the Manchester Under 7’s. The sun was shining on a brisk autumn morning as the team took to the Astroturf pitch.
Manchester started with their strongest team. Harry, Lightening Ben, Thunder Ben, Ewan, Charlie, Jamie and Frank (making his debut having turned 6 last week!). Macclesfield won the toss and chose to start. Manchester started with purpose and tagged furiously, ensuring Macclesfield made very little progress into the Manchester half. Following a couple of turnovers Ewan blazed down the wing and was unfortunate not to be awarded a try after putting a foot into touch as he grounded the ball. Moments later Harry cut through the Macc defence to for the opening score. This was quickly followed by Lightning Ben for the first of his 2 trys in the match. At half time Manchester turned leading 2-1 having let Macc squeeze through their resolute defence.
The second half was all Manchester scoring 4 unanswered trys. Scored by Lightening Ben, George, Charlie and finally Ewan. Manchester showed an excellent defence. Through a combination of great tagging, good spacing, good positional sense and a never say die attitude to chasing down the opponent. Macclesfield struggled to make it close to the Manchester line. Strong in defence were Jamie, Frank, and Thunder Ben and the score finished 6-1 in favour of the visitors, a great start to the day for the Tigers.
After a short break the teams lined up for a second encounter. It was clear from the off that Manchester were continuing their excellent performance from the first game. Macclesfield played well but Manchester’s greater experience, speed and tenacious defence led to quite a one sided match. The Tigers backed each other up very well, were accurate with their passing and maintained a good defensive line throughout. Manchester scored ten trys in total scored by Lightening Ben 3, George 3, Charlie 2, Ewan, and Harry. They only conceded one try throughout the whole of the second game, running out 10-1 winners. Another amazing Tigers display!
During the main matches, the Tiger Cubs (new players and those not eligible) learned more about the skills required in tag rugby as they teamed up with the other Macclesfield players in a coaching session. Zac, and Oliver continue to show that they are going to be great assets to the team when those 6th birthdays click round, and William, Morgan and Luke showed they also enjoyed the game and will learn more as the weeks go on.
So, the Tigers maintained their unbeaten record in mini league this season with two great displays in the sunshine at Macclesfield. Well done to all the boys.
