Close victory for the Medics after Wigan make a come back in the second half.

Match Report - 22/10/16

Wigan went agonisingly close to recording their first win of the season over a talented Manchester Medics side, at Douglas Valley.

The Medics opened the scoring early on to take a 7-0 lead before Niall Castelli finished off a good move from a Wigan attacking lineout to cross the line. John Clayton added the conversion to tie the game.

A little over 30 minutes into the game and the Medics were once again putting the Wigan line under sustained pressure eventually grounding in the corner. The sides went in 7-12 at half time.

The Medics looked the better side after half time and within 10 minutes of the restart had added another try and conversion, quickly followed by a penalty. With the scores at 7-22 the game looked to be heading away from Wigan.

However, the fight was not gone from the home side and the momentum swung back Wigan’s way, after a good move in the backs saw Adam Dwyer cut inside his man, break a tackle and battle his way over the line. The conversion was missed but Wigan were in the ascendancy.

Wigan continued to run the ball and throw it out wide and it soon paid dividends as John Clayton took the ball 20 yards out and with one outstretched arm managed to put the ball down on the line for a try that he also converted.

In the final moments with the scores at 19-22 and the Medics seemingly in control of the ball, Wigan made an interception 80 yards out. Connor Matthews made the break and in the knowledge he was about to be caught, chipped the ball through for Danny Winrow to collect and go over unopposed. However, the ball took a terrible bounce and fell to the Medic’s full back who managed to clear and save the game for the Manchester side.
