Manchester needs to get ready and raring for a health kick, as research by leading health and beauty retailer Superdrug has shown that Mancunians are lacking the motivation and encouragement to realise their health goals, whether that’s to lose weight, quit smoking, or lower their blood pressure. Superdrug understands how hard it is to take the first step, so is lending the nation a helping hand to improve their health and take action, with the launch of #TeamMe.
#TeamMe is a UK-wide campaign led by Olympic medal winners Rebecca Adlington and Stef Reid to inspire and encourage the nation to act on their health issues, and reach their long awaited goals, after research shows 89% of Brits want to improve their health. To spread the word and inspire locals to get healthy, Superdrug is bringing in some muscle and adding a splash of colour to its Manchester Piccadilly store today (28th April) by welcoming the Manchester and Northwest England's gay and inclusive rugby union football team, The Village Spartans.
In a bid to help the nation take a positive step to improve their health, the local lads will be getting involved with the following activities happening in store including:
- Free in store health checks with Superdrug pharmacists including blood pressure checks, quit smoking advice, discussions around current health, weight management advice and BMI checks
- Make your health pledge and dive into our lucky dip to walk away with free health and wellbeing products from Superdrug
- Try the latest products from health and wellbeing brands LighterLife Fast, Slim Fast and Kinetik
Ready to make a healthy change is Manchester’s very own born and bred Sarah Barker, a 35-year-old mum of three who is determined to lose weight as part of her #TeamMe journey.
Sarah has been receiving support and encouragement from the
dream team that is Adlington and Reid, as well as pharmacists, doctors and nutritionists with the hope of achieving her health goal.
Talking at the launch of #TeamMe, Sarah said: “At the moment, I don’t feel bikini ready for my holiday, but having the support of the #TeamMe group by my side, I am determined to achieve my goal.”
Sarah isn't alone in wanting to shift a few pounds as the research showed weight loss is the top health concern for Brits. 72% of people admitted it’s an area they’ve tried or thought about trying to improve, yet the majority of those questioned (58%) were unable to correctly identify what a healthy body mass index (BMI) should be.
And while the main reason for wanting to improve health was personal “doing it for me” (70%) a fifth (21%) cited ‘setting a good example for their children’ as a motivating factor, showing that Brits are determined to improve the future health of their families.
Speaking at the launch of #TeamMe, former Olympic swimmer, and co-captain of #TeamMe, Rebecca Adlington said: “You’re never too old, too busy or too late to make a positive change to your health and getting the right support is key to achieving your goal. I could never have achieved my gold medal success without the help of my training team, so that’s why I’m proud to be part of Superdrug #TeamMe – it’s a positive, inspiring campaign with solid expert advice from Superdrug. I think the team is going to be unstoppable in achieving their targets and I can’t wait to go on this journey with them.”
Healthcare Director at Superdrug, Michael Henry said: “At Superdrug we’re proud of our team of in-store and online healthcare experts who help inform and inspire our customers to improve their heath on a daily basis. Our aim for #TeamMe, is that with the added support of sporting legends Rebecca Adlington and Stef Reid, we can expand our reach to get everyone across the country making positive changes, and with Superdrug and #TeamMe by their side, getting them to win their own health gold.”
The #TeamMe campaign is open to everyone and over the next four months, Superdrug will be encouraging as many people as possible to take part and pledge their own health and wellbeing goals.
Those wanting to take part can simply log onto www.superdrug.com/teamme where there are a range of experts on hand to provide advice including Rebecca Adlington, Stef Reid, TV doctor Pixie McKenna and nutritionist, Charlotte Stirling-Reed.
Brits looking to get healthy can also use the #TeamMe hashtag on social media to pledge their own health goals and follow others taking part.
