Potential players will be aged 16 to 18 or year 11 school leavers who are looking to combine a Rugby League career with studying a full-time course.

Aimed at players who want to join the course in September 2012, the trials will be held on Wednesday 15 February, and all students who are selected for the Rugby League Academy receive kit, professional coaching, and opportunities to compete and display their skills in the regional and national league and cup competitions.

Students do not have to study a Sports course to be a part of a Sports Academy at The Manchester College; they simply have to enrol as a student at the college and be passionate and committed to develop in their chosen sport.

The Manchester College Men’s Rugby League Academy has a successful partnership with Mancunians RL and the RFL, whilst the Men’s Academy has continued to develop and grow this season.

The Academy has been launched at an exciting time for the Rugby League community in Manchester. Manchester has recently been chosen as a host city for the 2013 World Cup, with the World Cup final likely to be held at Old Trafford and the City will welcome the Magic Weekend for the first time in May of this year and students on the course expected to be able to be involved in the major events.

The partnership between Mancunians RL and The Manchester College was established in 2011 and aims to provide a player pathway for those young people with an identified Rugby League talent that are involved in full-time study at The Manchester College as well as promote and encourage Rugby League participation for players of all abilities and gender within the College and its local communities.

“The players within our Rugby League academy have worked hard all season and have shown they have the talent and dedication to improve as Rugby League athletes,” said Tom Sumner, Head of The Manchester College Rugby League Academy.

The link with Mancunians RL and the RFL means that the players have benefitted from the knowledge and experiences shared by the Academy Coaches, and also gives the players a goal to aim for by breaking into the Mancunians RL first team.”
