Mancunians Launch Handball Programme

Chorlton based Mancunians RL will create an innovative partnership this September when they launch a handball programme in Manchester.

Mancunians are primarily a Rugby League club operating a mens and junior team but, will be the first dual Handball and Rugby club in Manchester.

Mancunians have received funding from England Handball which will see the club deliver Handball coaching in local schools and to form a Handball club for young people during the winter months helping to build on a successful Olympic games for the GB Handball team. The club will also offer playing opportunities for adults with a view to forming a team and entering a competitive league.

The link up with England Handball will also see four coaches qualified to coach in the local community and support given to the creation of a team at Manchester Metropolitan University as part of Mancunians' expanding partnership with the UK's third largest University. The link will also enable Mancunians to engage further with the local community through the innovative partnership.

Stefan Hopewell, Chairman of Mancunians said: "The relationship with England Handball is going to allow us to engage with the community and local schools on a level that we have not done before. The Handball club will be based at a local school and we'll be offering in and out of school provision for young people in addition to forming a club under the Mancunians banner.

"Handball is a dynamic, fast paced Olympic sport which fits nicely alongside Rugby League and there is a high level of skill crossover between the two games and is played throughout the winter months allowing Mancunians to operate on a year round basis, bringing a multitude of benefits to the club. He said.

Ste Gordon, who will lead the Handball project for Mancunians said: "I would urge anyone, male or female, young, or not so young, to come down to Mancunians Handball when we start in September. It's a fast paced sport suitable for anyone regardless of ability and If you want more information please contact me through www.mancuniansrl.com or call me on 07872 567303."
