Young Mancunian Kemar Gyles has been selected for Rochdale Hornets in a pre-season game as he attempts to secure a professional contract.

Gyles, 20, from Withington has been training with the Cooperative Championship 1 side for the last few weeks and has impressed Head Coach John Stankevitch during that time with his determination and commitment.

He first played Rugby League in 2009 with Mancunians RL after playing rugby union as a junior and rapidly progressed to be a first team regular for Mancunians in the last two seasons.

He spent much of the 2011 season ‘on loan’ to Cadishead Rhinos and Oldham St Annes in the National Conference honing his skills against seasoned rugby league players and now is aiming to make the grade in the Christmas trial game against the best of Rochdale amateur players on December 28th.

Gyles has been working hard during training, and is currently the fastest player at Rochdale Hornets after sprint testing last week. They were tested over 10, 20 & 30m and the young Mancunian came out top, beating speedsters including established first team player Casey Mayberry in the process.

Rochdale Head Coach Stankevitch said: “It’s been an exciting month since we returned to training, with all the new faces impressing myself, Chris Hough and Dace Ramsbottom, and we all see some potential first team players amongst the new additions.

“There are some players that I already have my eye on for this coming season with a view to bringing them in, early in 2012.” He said.

“My intention is through December, January & even February in the Northern Rail Cup, is to expose the young lads to as much competitive rugby at this level as possible. It is these lads who will take the club to the next level and hopefully be part of the club playing in the Championship in 2013” Said Stankevitch.

“Kemar is working hard and I’m looking forward to seeing him play in a couple of weeks time. He has everything to play for.” He added.
