St Andrews avenge home defeat with bonus point win at Griff and Coton
A POOR second-half showing saw Manor Park start 2018 with a disappointing home defeat against Rugby St Andrews.
Two penalties from Chris Morewood
gave the hosts an early lead as Park built on the sure footing of secure line out and scrum ball.
But a failure to land the try they often threatened was punished as St Andrews scored two unconverted tries.
St Andrews added two further tries early into the second half to claim the bonus point and go some way to avenging their defeat in September’s reverse fixture.
But there was little danger of Park repeating that 31-29 success as pressure in the Rugby 22 wasn’t converted into points through a combination of clever penalty concession, lenient officiating but moreover, a lack of cutting edge.
The scoreline gained some unreflective gloss with two late tries, the last being fortuitous to the extreme, as Rugby ran away with a deserved victory that kept them third in Midlands 3 West South, level on points with Park’s next opponents Shipston.
Park lie ninth in the table with a nine-point buffer above the drop zone following second-bottom Bromyard’s win over Alcester.
There were some positives for Park to salvage with Elliot Lucas
making his first-team debut and Tom Reed
making a long-awaited return from injury.
