March Bears were on the road again to Mildenhall Red Lodge with a squad of 19 players, hoping to reverse the losses of previous two games.
Bears found it difficult to settle into the game with the match official interpretation of rucking and trying to retrieve ball from the opposition, the Ref spoke to the skipper saying next penalty by March will result in a yellow card March center Tom Long was the unfortunate player carded, and out game for ten minutes.
Mildenhall took advantage and two penalties were converted to take a 6-0 lead, back to full strength again March started to move the big Home pack about and quick ball out to the backs and final pass to Tom (Ratty) Ratcliff stormed over for a try converted by Ben Brooks to take the lead 6-7.
Mildenhall were put under pressure by March, and started to concede penalties’ Ben Brooks slotted one over to increase the bears lead 6-10 just before halftime Mildenhall scored a converted try to re-take the lead 13-10 which the Bears were un happy about as it came from three knock on`s Bears bounced straight back when again the home side conceded another penalty again Ben Brooks put the ball through the posts to level the scores 13-13 as the half time whistle went.
Second half March started to dominate play and from a ruck the ball was passed out to Ben Brooks whose pace split the home side defence to touch down under the posts and converted the kick to take back the lead 13-20 ,March had several chances to wrap up the game but the final pass either went slightly forward or knocked on with the try line beckoning.
Halfway through the second half Tom Long was yellow carded again, two yellows mean sent off for rest of the game, Mildenhall started to take advantage and pressed hard on the Bears line but were met with a wall of march players. Determined not to let them cross, a break away by march was cut short when centre James Beresford broke away and sprinted to the oppositions 22 meter line and s stopped in his tracks by a high tackle which knocked him out, had to be substituted.
With ten minutes left as the bears began to tire due to the amount of defending they had to do Mildenhall breached Marchs try line to level the score with a converted try 20-20 with only seconds from full time Mildenhall crossed over to seal the game, 25-20.
It was a game that the bears should not have lost, playing 50 minutes with only 14 players the team shown a lot of improvement from previous matches; this was a game that they should have won.
March scrum half Ed Cribb had an excellent game, but man of the match goes to Ben Brooks, the Bears have started to gain some younger players, along with the more experienced players blended well into the team, This Saturday the Bears are at home facing undefeated league leaders Bury St Edmunds 3rd XV , March should have a strong squad available for this game , and will be looking for further improvement on their match day performances.
