Pain at the Lane for Mariners...

Marine went down to a disappointing defeat at Westfield Lane on Saturday, hosts Frickley Athletic running out deserved 2-0 winners.

A frustrating day for Sean Hessey's men saw them struggle to make any impact on a well organised home side, who could have won the game by a wider margin than they eventually did.

Frickley took the lead with 20 minutes on the watch after a scrappy opening period, Luke Mangham having plenty of time and space to shoot and although Calvin Hare parried he was powerless to prevent Noel Burdett from steering the rebound inside the far post.

Joe Mwasile and Kurt Sherlock showed some promising touches inside the Frickley last third but the homesters, with the blustery wind at their backs, were on the front foot for the first half and had further chances, Andy Ofusu's strong drive being well saved by Hare before Rhys Meynell headed in a free kick, with the beleaguered Mariners saved by the assistant's offside flag.

Marine looked more likely to get back in to the game early in the second half, Mwasile having their first shot on target around the hour mark which Seb Malkowski pushed away as it bounced awkwardly in front of him.

Frickley notched the all important second goal on 65 minutes, a corner from the left being met by Luke Hinsley with a powerful header in to the bottom corner.

Further chances went begging for the Blues as the Mariners increasingly threw men forward, Hinsley having a rising drive clutched by Hare, Burdett racing clear to chip just over the top and Nathan Valentine also putting a good chance over the bar.

Marine did create a couple of late openings, Danny Mitchley's header being tipped over by Malkowski and Mwasile stretching to put an effort wide but it was not enough for the Crosby club on an afternoon to forget in West Yorkshire.
