Mariners draw at Valerie Park...

Match report by Dave McMillan

Marine completed their pre season friendly programme with a 1-1 draw at neighbours Prescot Cables on Saturday.

This was a much more competitive affair than most friendlies, with the draw being the right result, Marine having the better of the first half but the home side having the upper hand in the second.

Joe Evans had the ball in the net for Cables early on following a corner, but the offside flag cut short his celebrations.

It was Marine though who opened the scoring after 23 minutes, Michael Ordish once again providing good delivery from the left flank, with home centre back Chris Rimmer’s sliced clearance looping over goalkeeper Andy Moor and in to the net.

John Shaw was on hand to clear Luke Edwards’ goal bound effort off the line after the Cables winger had beaten Ryan McMahon with a shot from the left, before Marcus Carver cut inside to fire a strong drive wide of the far post at the other end.

Shaw should probably have made it 2-0 just before the break, meeting Ordish’s corner with a powerful header but sending the ball over the crossbar.

The start of the second half saw Karl Noon try a long range effort which flew just wide, with Ordish bringing a save from Moor with a free kick to the near post.

Prescot equalised after 66 minutes from a free kick, the mercurial Smiler Thomas stepping up to score from a position to the right centre of goal.

Substitute Dan Nolan had a great chance to win the game for cables in the dying minutes, racing clear and having the time to pick his spot, but only succeeding in placing the ball wide as McMahon came off his line.
