Mariners earn hard fought point at Borough Park...

Match report by Dave McMillan.

Marine gained their first away League point of the season on Tuesday night, as they came away from Workington's Borough Park with a 0-0 draw.

In fairness this wasn't a classic encounter with few clear cut chances at either end, but Carl Macauley's men have needed to steady the ship and have done so with two draws from a couple of tough fixtures.

Rangy striker Martyn Coleman came closest to breaking the deadlock early on, his shot on the turn beating Marine custodian Matt Cooper but rebounding off the foot of the far post.

Coleman had further opening soon afterwards, another effort on the turn being crowded out by a phalanx of yellow clad defenders.

The Mariners found most joy down the left with Andy Fowler causing plenty of problems for the homesters, his direct running and shooting being the most likely route to a goal for the Crosby club, a couple of trademark shots being blocked or deflected wide of the target.

Cooper kept out a sweetly struck angled drive from Gari Rowntree at his near post, but Dan Fearnehough came close to putting Marine ahead after his volley from Jonny Jamieson's wayward clearance flew narrowly wide of an upright.

Marine got the ball down well early in the second half without being able to deliver the final pass, Workington finishing the game strongly with Scott Allison firing over the top when well placed, before bringing another good stop from Cooper from the right of the area as the game ended in stalemate.
