Match report by Dave McMillan
Marine went down to a narrow 2-1 defeat in their latest pre season friendly, at Burscough’s Victoria Park on Saturday.
The starting eleven had a more familiar look to it than in Tuesday’s outing at Runcorn, with the squad for the opening League match on August 18th slowly starting to take shape.
The game got off to a bright start with Thomas Moore bringing a good save from Tim Horn in the home goal, before Andy Fowler
put a shot over the bar.
The Greens always looked lively on the attack and they went in to the lead after 9 minutes, John Kennedy intercepting a pass before trying his luck with a long range lob, the ball sailing over Callum
Williams and in to the net.
Anthony Field blazed over for the Linnets after a good move down the left, with Chris Tyson having a free kick which cleared the crossbar.
Marine fashioned some opportunities of their own, Fowler having a couple of 25 yard efforts which forced saves from Horn.
Their best chance came late in the half, the busy Michael Ordish
- who caused problems for the Linnets all afternoon - advancing to the goal line to cross, Paul Brown
not quite making enough contact with his head at the far post.
The second half saw matters fairly even but it was 2-0 to Burscough on 61 minutes, Louis Mayers picking the ball up 30 yards out before advancing and unleashing a venomous strike, Williams getting a touch but the power on the shot proving decisive.
Ordish put a free kick inches wide of an upright for the Mariners before latching on to Matty Devine
’s defence splitting pass, the fomer Southport winger’s chip clipping the bar.
It was no surprise when Ordish eventually did score, bursting in to the left of the box to steer a well placed drive across the advancing Horn and in to the far corner with nine minutes to go.
Mayers might have added a third for the hosts in the dying minutes, hammering another effort from 20 yards which Williams palmed over the top but there were no further goals as Burscough recorded the win.
