North Ferriby United 0-2 Marine
Mariners make it three from four...
Marine recorded another vital win on Saturday, as they beat North Ferriby United 2-0 at the Chadwick Stadium to move out of the Evo-Stik Premier Division relegation places.
The game was a keenly contested affair on a tricky pitch, the Mariners taking the points courtesy of second half goals from Chris Doyle and Liam Hynes to seal their third win in four games.
Paddy Wharton was the busier goalkeeper in the first half and had to be alert to make a good save at the foot of his near post from a well struck free kick, and also dealt with several shots from distance by the hosts.
Niall Cummins had an early sight of goal for Marine but his shot lacked the power to beat Lewis Exall, Hynes having the clearest opening for the visitors with a close range header from a corner that went off target.
The Mariners grabbed the all important first goal seconds after the restart, Danny Mitchley getting away down the right to set up Cummins with the big striker’s shot blocked on the line, but Doyle was on hand to fire home the rebound.
Marine had several opportunities to wrap up the points, Cummins and Mitchley both having efforts off target or blocked.
Ferriby still carried a threat from set pieces and got the ball in to the box on a number of occasions but couldn’t trouble Wharton other than from crosses.
The visitors finally made sure of the points in the 89th minute, Cummins firing in a strong drive which Exall pushed around the post at full stretch but from the resultant corner Hynes got round the back to hammer the ball in to the roof of the net from close range.
Marine travel to Buxton on Saturday before hosting Stalybridge Celtic on Saturday 19th January (3pm).
