Marine 1-1 Scarborough Athletic
Mariners and Seadogs go again in FA Cup after MTA draw...
Report by Ste Carson
Marine drew with Scarborough Athletic 1-1 in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup on the wet surface at the Marine Travel Arena.
Marine started the brighter of the two sides but found themselves on the wrong end of the referee’s whistle too often and couldn’t capitalise on their early dominance.
The FA Cup fixture maintained a grittiness throughout the first half and it was purely down to Martin Fearon and Thomas Taylor that it was goalless at half-time.
Danny Mitchley had arguably the best chance of the 45 minutes but was unable to find anywhere other than Taylor’s gloves and the goalkeeper held well.
Scarborough started the second half with purpose but the Marine defence – Fearon included – held strong and were able to bounce back when the Seadogs tired.
Josh Hine gave Marine the lead in the 55th minute, James Short saw his shot saved by Taylor but Hine was there for the rebound and rolled the ball into the empty net.
It didn’t take long for Scarborough bounce back as just two minutes later James Walshaw headed them level.
Scarborough captain Kevin Burgess was given a straight red card 25 minutes from time and, once they went down to ten men, Scarborough very much resorted to counter-attacks for the remainder of the game and their defence held strong.
