Scarborough Athletic 2-3 Marine
Mariners progress in the FA Cup...
Marine came away from Scarborough with an excellent - and thoroughly merited - win in a pulsating FA Cup First Round Qualifying replay at the Flamingo Land Stadium on Tuesday night.
Ian Johnson made one change to his starting line up with Dom Reid coming in for James Murray, and the Mariners started strongly with Danny Mitchley bulleting a header past home custodian Tommy Taylor from Kenny Strickland's inviting free kick with just six minutes on the watch.
The Mariners had the better of the early exchanges and went close to doubling their lead, James Short getting in to the penalty area with his cross finding Josh Hine at the far post, Boro full back Dave Merris producing a great block to divert the ball over the bar when a goal seemed certain.
The homesters began to get more in to the game with a number of half chances, Martin Fearon tipping one effort over the bar but it was the Blues who grabbed the second goal on 26 minutes, Dom Reid pouncing on Kevin Burgess's attempted header back to his keeper to calmly lift the ball over the stranded gloveman.
Scarborough increased the pressure towards the end of the half and reduced the arrears just before half time, James Walshaw getting on the end of a corner from the left to knock the ball home from close range.
Boro came out after the break and put the Marine defence under heavy pressure, the Blue shirted phalanx protecting the lead well and looking to break with numbers at every opportunity as the partisan home crowd began to get behind their team.
The crucial third goal arrived on the hour and it was one to savour, Danny Mitchley releasing Craig Carney to surge past a couple of challenges before hammering a rising drive in to the top corner of the net from just outside the area.
The Seadogs grabbed another lifeline with nine minutes left, Walshaw's initial effort coming back off the bar and straight on to the striker's head to nod home the loose ball.
The crowd got behind the Yorkshiremen once more as time ticked on, the Mariners again coping admirably with some heavy pressure and a number of set pieces but arguably having the clearer chances, substitute James Murray bringing a fine save from Taylor at the death but the Mariners held out to book a home tie with Frickley Athletic on Saturday 22nd September.
