Tough trip to League Winners Lichfield

Bosworth loose 65 - 19 away at Hereford

Relegated Market Bosworth travelled the short distance to top of the league Lichfield who have already been proved champions and assured a place in National league 3 next season.

The Bosworth changes from last weeks game was; in the backs, Akroyd replaced the injured Moore at fullback, Milner returned to replace Williams at centre. In the forwards, Kirby replaced Summers at prop, Wickwar moved to second row to replace Barker and Devlin returned to replace Driver. Amongst the replacements was Murray, Stack and Norris who has returned to the side following a few weeks out with work commitments.

It was a daunting task that faced the visitors and Lichfield were in no mood to take prisoners as their powerful pack and running backs slipped into gear from the start.

An early penalty gave them a 3-0 lead swiftly followed by a backs move that saw them going over in the corner to lead 8-0 after five minutes. Bosworth had to dig in to hold back the onslaught from this professional outfit as they went through their paces. Only strong defending from Josh Devlin, Chris Harding and Ricky Wickwar held them at bay until they finally breached the Bosworth resilience. Lichfield scored another converted try to extend the lead to 15-0. Bosworth managed to contain their powerful counterparts in midfield gaining ground into the Hosts 22 but lacked any real penetration against the host well drilled defence. Harry Milner was penalised and carded for not releasing which allowed Lichfield to clear their line and hit Bosworth with another score. This time they were awarded a penalty try for dropping the scrum. Increasing the lead to 22-0 after 25 minutes. From a poor restart kick, a scrum on the half way line followed by a quick ball to the back line and couple of minutes later the score became 27-0 on the stroke of Half Time.

With a mountain to climb the visitors were soon put on the back foot as Lichfield continued to batter the visitors from the restart. Their back line were now in top gear after visiting the changing rooms at half time with swift slick moves, helped by some inept tackling and unforced errors by the visitors, led to them scoring 4 tries in the next 15 minutes and increase their lead to 51-0.

A shell-shocked Bosworth never gave up, never lost heart against the League champions. They started to graft their way back in to game with some sterling forward play rucking and mauling their way into the Lichfield 22 with some fine phase work from Saunders, Wickwar and Tales driving forward. Lichfield were awarded a scrum on their 22 and as they started mount another attack from deep Bosworth centre Guy Norris made an interception and strolled over for Bosworth's first score which Chris Harding converted. 51-7. From the restart Lichfield repaid the complement with their own intercept score and restore their lead to 58-7.
Bosworth recovered from yet another setback and returned to their rucking and mauling game slowly, yard by yard, pressing the hosts back towards their line. Sam Harding, Phil Blackler and Jed Tales all making ground which had Lichfield retreating. A 5 yard scrum, a quick ball saw Guy Norris crash over for his 2nd try of the game and reduce the score to 58-14 with the Harding conversion. The visitors continued with this late revival taking the game into the Lichfield 22 once again. This time the forwards rolling maul saw Ricky Wickwar touchdown at the bottom of a final drive. And the score to 58-19. The visitors looking to secure a try bonus point as the game entered the final minutes were undone by an unforced error picked up by the Hosts back division to sweep upfield and restore the lead to 65-19.

Bosworth gave their all in this tough game but there were certain areas of which they didnt particularly do well. Bosworth once again showed spirit and gave their all until the final whistle. Norris won coach Rob Harding’s man-of-the-match accolade.

Next weekend Bosworth are at home to Malvern RFC in the last league game of this tough season; kick off is 3:00pm!!
