Market Drayton Town all but secured NPL league status for a 6th successive season with a hard-fought victory over Norton United on Easter Monday.

Barring a minor miracle Drayton will enjoy a 7th season in the NPL Div 1S with both Rainworth and Kidsgrove now fighting it out between them for the last remaining relegation spot.

Drayton won the game on Monday with a last gasp winner to the delight of the Drayton faithful. The original match had been abandoned on Boxing Day due to heavy snow but the conditions couldn't have been any more perfect for the re-arranged game.

Norton took the lead on 17mins as they carried on where they left off in the original game. A missed penalty that was ballooned over the bar late in the half was the turning point as Drayton were a totally different team in the second half. On 63 mins Drayton deservedly drew level with a Scott Ryan goal and the somewhat fiery match looked to be headed for a draw. A last gasp goal from Jeff Watkins though took the points which overall was probably a bit harsh on Norton considering the original game and the last gasp outcome here. Football can be cruel.

Drayton head to Mickleover Sports tomorrow who can win promotion with a win coupled with a Leek Town loss. It will be tough against a team who beat Drayton 6-1 at home but Drayton are on a high and Mickleover could get nervous with the finishing line and promotion so close. A midweek loss at home to Tividale for Mickleover has kept a rampant Leek Town in the frame for automatic promotion.

Photos from Easter Monday's game will be on the website soon.
