Drayton succumb to a resurgent Chasetown
Jack Langston's return to Chasetown heralded a resounding victory as the visitors leapfrogged Drayton in the table thanks to a comfortable 3-1 win.
Chasetown started brightly and enjoyed the majority of early chances. Drayton's defence held out well but Alex Ilchenko was beaten just a few minutes into the game by Muzzy Nduna only to see the ball cleared off the line by a retreating JJ Melligan. Will Whieldon was kept at bay initially and was forced to shoot from distance with both early efforts soaring over the crossbar. Javia Roberts and George Bowerman linked up well to produce a series of fine saves from Curtis Pond. Back in Drayton's half, Ilchenko was not to be outdone by his opposite number and tipped an effort from Daniel Cocks over the bar in style after half an hour.
Chasetown's pressing paid off after 38 minutes when midfielder Jack Langston, on his return to Chasetown, sent a looping header over Ilchenko to open the scoring for the visitors after a cross from Ryan Wynter. Minutes later, Will Whieldon shot again from the edge of the area and found the bottom corner of the goal to make it 2-0 at half time.
Moments into the second half, Ryan Seal was felled inside the Chasetown penalty area. It was as clear a penalty as you'll see all season, but the referee's perspective led to him deciding the ball was played and duly booked Seal for diving.
The heavy pitch and greasy surface led to several stoppages during the second half to attend to felled players. The Chasetown physio having spent enough time on the pitch attending to both sets of players to warrant a squad number next season.
Drayton created chances and could have found a way back in to the game were it not for more goal-line clearances. Chasetown eventually put the game beyond reach after 59 minutes when Daniel Cocks crossed for Muzzy Nduna to head home at the near post.
Chasetown contained Drayton in the last 30 minutes. Jacob Lovatt still found time to rattle the crossbar, however. Drayton's highlight came in the dying seconds when Ryan Seal sent a superbly-shaped free kick over the wall and into the bottom left hand corner of the goal to seal a consolation for the home side.
