U12 MRFC 5 - 20 Minety
Marlborough lacking players and lustre
A scratch Marlborough side, beset by illness, succumbed to a second defeat, in as many weeks, in this friendly fixture against Minety. Minety had the passion (on the field and off) to overcome Marlborough early on in the first half. Marlborough did eventually wake up having conceded three early tries and hit back with a nicely worked overlap for Archie Bell in the corner. But this was one of the few highlights of the day where the ball just didn't seem to stick in the hand or the bounce go our way.
The ruck did work well for the home team and there were some effective carries from Max, Tom, MC, Freddie, Ben, Jack, James F and Archie in particular. But in general our attacks seemed impotent against a defensive line drilled to close Marlborough down quickly (too quickly in a couple of instances). Marlborough didn't press Minety and were unable to contain a team seemingly keen to avenge their cup defeat on the common earlier in the season. Ollie LB was tenacious at the breakdown, Archie T great in the ruck (for a small guy!) but these brave efforts need backing up to convert into points.
Despite the score, I believe Marlborough played the better rugby and it was good experience for some players who tend not to get so much ball time. Charlie played very well and Johnnie was unfortunate not to score his debut try for Marlborough. As was the case last week I think a good training session will correct the niggles and bad habits that have crept in. Mid week training set to start in January and will, I believe, make a big difference to the basic skills that let us down today.
