'Marlborough Town failed in their bid to reach the final of the Corsham Print Senior Cup when they were beaten by visitors Melksham Town in a penalty shootout after the sides were level on two goals apiece after extra time.

Marlborough started well and took the lead midway through the first half with a far post header from Carl Mabberly.

The visitors fought back to equalise with a strike from Shawn Benison to send the sides in level at the break.

In a tense second half, neither team was able to take control although the home outfit went close on a couple of occasions and the tie drifted into extra time.

Marlborough began to have the edge and with eight minutes remaining Mabberly scored what looked to be the winner with a shot from the edge of the box.

However, in the last couple of minutes a strike by Ross Nemenghini took the tie to a penalty shoot out that was won 4-3 by Melksham.

Marlborough boss Adam Wainwright insisted his side did not deserve to lose, adding: "Football can kick you where it hurts on occasions and this was certainly one of them.

"We took the lead in the closing stages of extra time and ended up losing on penalties.

"It was disappointing, we were the better side on the day, acknowledged by the Melksham manager. The players did the club proud."'
