An Important 3 points!

By Laura Watson

A very cold ladies 3s team took to the pitch in Oxford today. After a slow but steady start, Marlow had more of the possession and moved the ball well through the midfield with lovely balls from Megan out wide using Katie W and Millie to move the ball onto Jenny and the Katies up front! Unusually, there was a of space on the left and there were some lovely through balls from defence to the attack with some early opportunities on goal. The first goal capitalised on one of these balls from Nicki at left half, passed through the middle and onto Bev, who very calmly struck the ball neatly into the goal. Despite a number of attacks from Oxford, Marlow remained in control, partly in thanks to some excellent defending from our inners, Lou and Sian, coming back in support. The rest of the first half saw Marlow with more of the play and in control of the game but unable to convert some of the excellent chances.

Oxford started well after half time and the defence definitely saw more of the ball in the second half with Nicki making some amazing jab tackles on the left and Helen having psychic powers to cut out amazing attacks in the middle. But Marlow continued to play our own game with lots of flowing hockey and plenty of chances. A short corner for Oxford in the second half saw them put a good strike in from the top of the D, thankfully well stopped by a new member of the defence, the post!! After this, we'd obviously decided we needed another goal to shore-up the scoreline, and as Megan stated on a short corner attack, 'We've got this'. Another goal was duly delivered, the strike on goal from Megan stopped by the keeper but with Bev on the left post able to collect the ball and put it in the back of the net. Oxford stayed fighting to the end and an excellent save in the top right corner of the goal from Adele with 5 minutes remaining, helped Marlow retain the clean sheet and take home the three points.

Player of the match votes were recorded widely within the team, reflective of the awesome team effort and fighting spirit from everyone. Ultimately KT Windsor took first place in the vote (again!) for her attacking runs on the right and defensive tracking back. DOD had a couple of contenders, with an impressive fall on a slippery pitch but Bev sealed the deal by turning up to play having forgotten her shin pads!
Goals - 2 to Bev Blackburn
Good luck for next week
