This trophy signifies the fact that United are right back where they belong and that’s at the forefront of local football. Our thanks of course immediately go out to Nick Flint who has had a tremendous season in his rookie year as manager of this club but its only right on our day of triumph not to forget those who held the reins when the good ship United found stormy waters and it is with some gratitude that we can also thank Gary Wiltshire for helping to guide United out of the darkness and into the broad sunlight that was the Madejski Stadium last evening.
The Madejski Stadium is just a marvellous setting for a cup final, there is no better outside of London in these parts and I thought the pitch was in awesome condition remembering that Reading had played Manchester City on it 48 hours previously.
I thought also that the representatives of Marlow United Girls who were there acting as ball girls did themselves and their club proud adorned very smartly in their club tracksuits, well done girls!!
It almost feels like the lull before the storm as we return to the Madejski this coming Tuesday where we expect to meet stiff opposition in Hellenic Premier Division Wokingham & Emmbrook but I truly believe they won’t be any stiffer opposition than South Reading were last evening and in any case we will be a little stronger with the return of both Adam Dickens and Mitch Woodward and not forgetting that Andy ‘Boxer’ Nicol, Leigh Mason, Jonny Mason and Mattie Letts had all played the previous evening in their Sunday cup final which definitely showed during the last 20 minutes or so of last night’s game.
So what a great performance and finishing of the highest level. We wondered if Boxer had lost his shooting boots, little did we know that he was just hanging on for the supreme moment!
So I will leave it there for now other than congratulating Nick and his team on a special night which now moves on to Tuesday evening where we can finally end this very long season!
Come on United!!
