This was not United’s finest hour as they fell heavily to the defending champions.

United stepped off for half time 5-2 down and it could be argued that but for better finishing it could easily have been 4-4. Frustratingly 2 Highmoor goals came literally seconds after United themselves should have scored two in consecutive attacks. With a strong wind and low sun against them it was always going to be difficult and that was accepted. The 5th goal was the real killer as to pull two goals back is always achievable to find three or even a fourth that would have been necessary to win it is so much harder.
Many reasons for the first half collapse can be found and justifiably so but there can be no excuse for what was effectively a second half surrender. United had the same advantage as Highmoor but failed to exploit the opportunity that was presented to them. Credit to the champions who defended will and were happy to soak up some pressure but United learned nothing and continued in the same manner as the first half and in the end thoroughly deserved their defeat.
Manager Letts now has some tough decision making as a defence that was so solid just a couple of months ago is now leaking goals for fun. Admittedly it’s desperate when you lose big players for such a contest but all teams do occasionally and it’s in these situations where titles are won and lost.
Its not for me to say but there are what appears to be some obvious choices to make if the season is to be gotten back on track. There is nothing to panic about as we still sit in a good position but important season defining decisions have to be made and soon!
On a lighter note it was good to see some former players at yesterday’s match, namely Andy Grieg who spent many seasons with the club back in the beginning to the early 90’s, Andy was a play anywhere player but generally recognised as a right footed left back. James Pritchard who scored the championship winning goal at Wilks Park back in 2005, Jeff Kisbee a United stalwart for over 20 years and sadly it seems James Flint whose knee injury may well have forced his retirement. James F was the youngest ever winner of the golden boot back in the 2004/05 season where he played alongside James P in the championship winning team. Just sorry that we couldn’t have provided them with a better result and performance.
Have to say the pitch looked 100% better yesterday and clearly the recent rain has done a job. We are settling into the Redgrave Sports Centre now and with the pitch soon to be widened and lengthened we look forward to a long tenure of mutual benefit. The facilities really are excellent.
The reserves beat Twyford yesterday 2-1 in the League Cup and will now meet Mortimer Reserves in the quarter final. Goals from Neil Austin and Mark Rowley sealed the tie.
Next week the first team entertain Berks County while the reserves travel to Wargrave hoping to avenge an early season home defeat. The reserves head Division Two on goal difference and will be eager to maintain top spot.
