Well a long and seemingly never ending season finally came to an end last evening at the Madejski Stadium.

A season while ending in a narrow defeat can be heralded as successful. With the Berkshire Trophy Senior Cup in the bag United strode out confidently against Hellenic Premier Division outfit Wokingham & Emmbrook and while slipping to a narrow 2-1 defeat the team can with justification hold its head high. I think it fair to say that we did the Reading Football League proud last evening and there were periods in the first half particularly when you actually wondered who were step 5 and 7 as there certainly was no gulf in class. But congratulations to Wokingham in retaining the cup but also congratulations to United for showing true grit and no small amount of quality in their play.

I was delighted for both Adam Dickens and Mitch Woodward in that they were available but particularly Adam, Mitch was bound to start but severe doubts concerning Adam’s fitness were a major doubt. The fact he fired home the opening goal was pleasing and if not for a cynical foul of the highest order he may well have saved the day with a late equaliser. Considering the injuries he sustained and the fact he had not played for a month was a credit to him for lasting the 90 minutes and looking menacing right to the end. Unfortunately for Dickens this his second appearance met with his second defeat. Best stay next season then Dicko!

The team have taken us on an adventure this season and it all ended at the high tower of local football, the Madejski Stadium. We have no complaints; we enjoyed the ride, thank you boys. See you in Portsmouth Saturday!

An end of season review will feature in this column next where I will finally sign off for a few weeks break.
