United cantered into the next round of the Berks & Bucks FA Senior Trophy ....... Inset an outnumbered! Andy Nicol attacks the ball.

.....with plenty to spare as local rivals Stokenchurch were put to the sword by 7-1. All credit to Stokenchurch who really were ‘lambs’ led to the slaughter but they played their football in the right manner and never gave up despite overwhelming odds.

If omens are anything to go by it was against Stokenchurch that United began their long journey to last season’s final at Bracknell Town with an 8-3 victory at Longburrow, the road will be long and arduous if United are to repeat last season’s herculean effort and they will certainly not enjoy many afternoons such as this.

The game was effectively over as a contest on 30 minutes as United swept into a 3-0 lead and there was no looking back despite second half profligacy that had Manager Letts pulling his hair out but 1-0 or 7-1 produces the same result and United will go into the hat for the second round.

As for Stokenchurch still fairly recently resurrected it’s just a case of on to the next game, they are welcome visitors and in time will grow stronger provided they show resilience and perseverance.

The Thames Valley Premier League enjoyed a good day in the Berks & Bucks FA Senior Trophy with notable wins by Reading YMCA 4-1 over Shrivenham and Cookham Dean 2-1 over Hellenic League strugglers Holyport. Only Mortimer 1-2 v Letcombe and Berks County 0-2 v Chalvey Sports failed to get past the first hurdle.

Other notable results in the competition that could affect United with a view to likely next round opponents apart from Chalvey Sports were Langley knocking out Wokingham & Emmbrook on penalties while Penn & Tylers Green overcame last season’s quarter- final conquerors Risborough Rangers 2-0.

Just one league game played in the Premier Division yesterday that saw Woodcote SR return to the top of the table with what appears to be an exciting 5-3 home win over Wokingham & Emmbrook.

The Second Division saw AFC Corinthians beat Hurst Reserves 4-0 while Brimpton Athletic were held at home to Mortimer Reserves 2-2 as early pacesetters FC Woodley beat Berks County Reserves 2-0.

United’s reserves travel to Mapledurham next week to play White Eagles who opened with a 3-2 win at home to Brimpton Athletic and so far have played just the one game.

United’s first team embark on the road to the Madejski Stadium with a home tie in the BTC Senior Cup against Taplow United . United will start as favourites but will do well to remember a shock quarter final 3-5 penalty shoot-out defeat at the hands of the visitors back in March 2014, nothing like a reminder to focus the mind!
