Marlow United Res 3 Berks County Res 1
The reserves took centre stage on Saturday and made it 3 wins out of the last 4...
.... to edge further away from the relegation zone.
Due to a waterlogged Dereham’s Lane the match was switched to Flackwell Heath College’s 3G pitch and this proved a factor in United’s 3-1 victory as the fine surface allowed United’s ball player to perform to their ability.
United started strongly, applying consistent pressure on the visitors goal and the front three of Hawkins, Flint and Diggs providing plenty of options for United’s midfield to exploit. Indeed, it only took 10 minutes for Marlow to open the scoring when Kieron Hawkins collected a long ball and his exquisite first touch found Ryan Lowe in space to drive home a half volley from all of 25 yards.
United maintained the pressure and it came as no surprise when 13 minutes later 1 became 2 as Ollie Flint curled in his effort from the edge of the box.
It was all Marlow now and on 38 minutes a low, driven cross from Lewis Draper connected with Lowe whose deflection was met by Flint to steer the ball into the back of the net to make it 3-0.
The expected second half onslaught didn’t occur as Berks County forced themselves back into the game only to be met with some sterling defending as United reverted to a back 5. However, on 60 minutes County forced themselves into the United box and Omar Jackson’s lunging challenge was penalised, with the resultants penalty duly converted.
There were no more scares as United held out for three valuable points.
