Marlow defeated Berks County Rovers in convincing style as they look to grab a top two finish

Picture. Chris Mantle who starred in the United back four.
Marlow convincingly defeated Berks County Rovers with an excellent 3-1 victory over their Berkshire opponents, in the process gaining revenge for their recent loss over the same opponents, and keeping alive their chances of a top two finish.
With the game played on a heavy surface the home team always posed the greater threat, scoring three excellent goals to ensure the 3 points.
United opened the scoring on 4 minutes with veteran forward Mark ‘Scouse’ Rowley receiving the ball on the edge of the area, his instant control allowing him to evade his marker, swivel and fire into the corner of the goal.
County pressed to get back on terms but they were met by a determined back four of Collins, Hickling, Mantle and Tipler who ensured that keeper Appleton was rarely troubled.
It was full back Ben Collins who added the second goal on 36 minutes with a run from the halfway line then hammering a 20 yard effort that was too hot for keeper Mann to handle as the ball flew into the net.
HT2-0
The visitors came out determined to pull themselves back into the game but they met an equally determined Marlow, Jones and Thorndyke winning the midfield battle to control the proceedings.
Eric Sharma really should have added a third on 53 minutes, put through on goal his effort was saved by keeper Mann.
Devonte Johnson found himself on the end of an overly robust challenge which resulted in a yellow card for his protagonist; it could easily have been a red.
County caught the Marlow defence on the hop for the first time on 62 minutes with Ollie Mann jinking his way past three defenders before being felled in the area.
United custodian Ben Appleton saved the spot kick spectacularly, diving to his right to save the effort.
Within a minute Marlow settled the destination of the points with a superb break from defence.
Matt Jones won the ball, spreading the play to Jack Thorndyke on the right.
Thorndyke ran on, crossing an inch perfect ball into the area where sub Kieron Stott slammed the ball over the line.
At 3-0 the game was pretty much done, could United keep a rare clean sheet, bearing in mind ,penalty apart, Appleton had few shots to deal with.
The visitors did gain a consolation with the last kick of the game, forcing the ball over the line, the ref calling time before the game could restart.
An excellent result and performance, Marlow travel to Taplow next Saturday for a cup game ko 2pm.
