New Workington Town signing Steve Scholey said he made the step up from the amateur game in search of a new challenge.

Scholey, who signed from Maryport this week, made appearances in both of Town’s pre-season friendlies after training with the squad in preparation for the 2015 Championship season.

Scholey admitted that playing in Town’s wins over Whitehaven and Wigan Warriors showed him it was a big different between the amateur and pro ranks.

“This year is going to be a really big step up,” Scholey said. “The games against Whitehaven and Wigan were really tough.

“It’s been great since I started here.

“There’s a great bunch of lads at the club.”

The prop is linking up with former Maryport teammates Sam Forrester and Scott Akehurst as well as fellow BARLA Great Britain international Dan Rooney.

“I’ve toured with Great Britain in the amateur game and I joined Workington for a new challenge,” he added.

“Pre-season was really tough but I don’t think I’ve ever been fitter.

“I’m hoping to make some first-team appearances this season and just improve as a player.”
