Great wins for 1s and 3s

1st Team 29 – 13 Dronfield
Matlock started with intent – scoring a converted try within 2 minutes. A period of stalemate followed, with some great defence from Matlock who then started to control the game towards the end of the first half, leading 3-14 at the halfway mark. The Blue Boys were clearly the better side in the second half, scoring some great tries and playing with intensity for long periods. This was another strong performance from the whole squad with the bench all playing an important part in securing another bonus point victory – and maintain 2nd place in the league.

2nd team game was cancelled by Notts Medics

3rd Team 57 – 22 Ashbourne
The game started with both sides attempting to get into the ascendancy and a strong Ashbourne side putting Matlock on the back foot. Good defence kept Ashbourne at bay, and following an epic try from skipper Bruce Johnson, Matlock dominated the remainder of the match, coming away with a resounding win.

U15 2 – 5 Chesterfield (tries)
The U15s put out a mixed squad, tackling bravely and gaining a lot of ground in the first half, but were beaten by strong opposition wing breaks and were 3 tries down in the first half. In the second half Matlock broke through twice to get themselves on the scoreboard and turned over ruck after ruck to win the second half 2-1. Massive effort from the lads, building on the confidence and experience of the last 5 games.

U14 35 – 17 Notts Casuals
The U14s played a great competitive game at Notts Casuals, eventually winning comfortably.

U13 80 – 10 Chesterfield Panthers
Matlock kicked off and the Chesterfield forwards ran straight through the defence scoring an easy try, at which point things were looking ominous - fortunately the embarrassment of conceding such an awful try focused the teams mind and the forwards starting making the tackles and hitting the rucks, regularly turning the ball over. The U13s scrummaging was superior to Panthers, with a couple of set pieces resulting in tries. The forwards regularly shipped the ball out to the backs with some fantastic tries being scored. Try of the day was by Jack Evans who ran a fantastic line through from 30 metres out to score under the posts.

U12 1 – 1 Notts Corsairs (games)
The U12s played two tough games – losing the first but winning the second. With a depleted team, everyone stepped up and fought hard to get back into the game.

U11 lost to Notts Corsairs
The U11s were well beaten by an excellent Corsairs side. Matlock didn’t allow their heads to drop, but they were run ragged for the entire morning by a well drilled and well organised side.

U10 v Notts Corsairs
Last time around, this fixture was a brutal game of hard tackles and this time was no different. The coaches asked the U10s to defend hard and then move the ball around with open fast rugby – and they did this with style! No matter what is asked of this team, the lads and lasses never fail to disappoint! Cracking performance against a strong team.

U9 v Notts Corsairs
Corsairs were short on numbers, so in a display of great sportsmanship a number of Matlock players took it in turns to help them out with a few scoring against us! Matlock were great in defence but opted to run straight up the middle in attack and often into a solid Corsairs defensive line. By the end of the game the boys began to spot players in space and started using the wings. All in all, a good morning of rugby with the rain holding off to the end.

U8 v Notts Corsairs
The U8s had a great couple of games and showed they can hold their own in terms of play. It is clear to see they are developing well, and the coaches a confident they will be ready for next season where they will play a more physical game.

U7 v Notts Corsairs
The U7s played a very big Corsairs team. Matlock used side stepping and quick passing to beat their opposition and score great tries. Defense was good as well, with try saving tagging in both corners. Everyone is showing great progress in preparation for their step up to U8s.
