London Youth and Junior League - Under 12's
| Brentwood Elvers | 14 | vs | 16 | Medway Dragons |
Fine margins
Medway Dragons U12s travelled to Brentwood Essex to meet the Eels in a 7th round league clash. Both teams were hoping to bounce back after last week’s cup defeats and from start to finish nothing less than 100% was given by both teams.
Not for the first time this season the Dragons struggled to get going at the start of the game. A knock on from the kick off gave the Eels an attacking scrum from which they took full advantage to break through the Dragons defence to score a well converted try. It was the wakeup call the Dragons needed; they upped the game in defence and started to gain ground with good sets in attack. After both teams swapped completed sets, the Dragons made half the pitch with the first 4 tackles of the next set before Loose Forward Oscar Wells powered his way over from close range for an unconverted try. The Dragons then scored two great unconverted tries through Fullback Josh Butler, both very similar finishes with Josh rounding the winger and winning the sprint from the halfway line. The first coming from a well fielded kick by Scrum Half Lewis Hollidge just 20m out from their own try line and Josh taking the ball from him at pace to round the winger. The second was even better when after a spell of Brentwood pressure, great defence turned the ball over on the Dragons goal line before a quick play the ball and great hands put Josh away again, making the half time score 6 – 12 in favour of the Dragons.
The Dragons made a good start to the second half, again defending well to keep Brentwood pinned in their own half and after having 4 attempts at crossing the hosts line they realised the only way through was to get it wide, Centre Tom Narborough switched the angle of attack before passing it wide, the ball went through 4 pairs of hands before Second Row James Turner went over in the corner to score. The Eels came back hard against a tiring Dragons side getting the ball wide at every opportunity and really stretching the Dragons defence. One such attack led to an unconverted try meaning one more converted try would tie the match. With the last play of the game Brentwood got the try they needed again out wide beating the cover for pace. Despite being on their last legs Oscar Wells and Lewis Hollidge both realised the kick would be the difference between a win or draw and managed to stop the scorer getting under the posts, fortuitously for the Dragons the try went unconverted meaning a 14 – 16 win for the Medway side.
Another great game of football and another nail biting finish, despite scoring 4 tries to 3 the Dragons were relying on conversions being missed (goal kicking practise in training this week) and maybe a draw would have been a fairer result. Brentwood players and coaches were magnanimous at the final whistle and we will certainly look forward to the return fixture.
